Easing Neck and Shoulder Tension

Simple habits to help your neck and shoulders feel looser.

Easing Neck and Shoulder Tension

Many of us carry tension in the neck and shoulders, especially after long hours at a desk or on a phone. A few simple habits can help these areas feel looser and more comfortable.

Move often

Staying in one position for too long is a common cause of stiffness. Every half hour or so, roll your shoulders gently, turn your head slowly from side to side, and let your arms relax. These small movements keep the area from tightening up.

Set up your space

When you sit, aim to keep your screen at about eye level and your shoulders relaxed rather than hunched. Holding a phone up instead of looking far down at it also takes strain off the neck.

Relax and breathe

Tension often builds up without us noticing. Taking a slow breath and consciously dropping your shoulders away from your ears, a few times a day, can gently release built-up tightness.

If neck or shoulder pain is persistent, severe, or comes with numbness or tingling, it is a good idea to check in with a professional.
